Hyperpigmentation
I think we can all agree it’s been a long hot sunny summer and we may be seeing the effects on our skin. So for August let’s talk about hyperpigmentation and what to do about it.
What is Hyperpigmentation ?
Simply put its dark spots on your skin or an area that has excess melanin. It can be caused by many different things most commonly the sun, but can also be hormonal, or from an injury like acne breakouts. It can affect all skin types and all skin colors.

Hyperpigmentation
The best treatment is prevention. It’s important to wear sunscreen on your face and body that is SPF of 30 or higher as well as clothes that keep you protected from that hot summer sun.
Avoid picking at the skin when you have scabs, acne, or any other spots
It is not always possible to prevent hyperpigmentation but there are some ways to reduce the risk.
Our favorite sunscreen is EltaMD it is available both online and at the spa.
Common treatments include
  • Laser treatment
  • Chemical peels
  • Topical creams
  • Intense pulse light
  • Prescription skin care
  • Retinoids
  • Restorative facial treatments
It’s important to seek a skin specialist in diagnosing hyperpigmentation, some treatments may make it worse.
For example if you have hormonal hyper pigmentation known as melasma heat base treatments often do not work and can Exacerbate melanin production, or turn it into hypopigmentation which is the reverse, and you could end up with white spots instead of dark spots.
